Atelier Projet Greffes Urbaines SP2
The rapid, uncoordinated, and fragmented urban expansion of Algerian cities—combined with the deterioration of existing structures, the aging of the urban fabric, and the sprawl that encroaches upon agricultural land at city edges—has exposed these cities to multiple, interrelated challenges. Among them are the urgent needs to renew their physical, environmental, social, and economic dimensions. Urban development is a continuous process rather than a fixed state; through strategic approaches, cities constantly evolve and reinvent themselves. This dynamic requires flexible, adaptive interventions capable of responding to emerging issues over time.
Intervening within existing urban environments therefore calls for innovative approaches, tools, and methodologies. Rebuilding the city from within must take into account both current and future challenges. While early urban regeneration efforts primarily focused on converting brownfields and revitalizing obsolete urban areas, contemporary practice increasingly emphasizes anticipating future development. This shift places greater importance on enhancing quality of life, landscape, architecture, identity, governance, and the broader physical, environmental, and socio-economic frameworks of the city.
Although the city itself constitutes the central focus of our studio, our attention also extends to the architectural dimension that gives it form and meaning, as architecture remains an essential component of the urban composition. The Urban Grafting Studio, part of Specialization 2: City and Sustainable Urban Project, aims to explore these dynamics and address the challenges arising from targeted urban interventions—grafts—conceived for the strategic regeneration of contemporary cities.
